NBA on pace for historic 3-point season as Celtics approach all-time marks

More than 30,000 3-point shots have been made in the current NBA season, extending the league’s record-breaking trend. As the Celtics are closing in on single-season shooting records, the NBA is on pace to shatter all-time marks.

James Harden hit a historic milestone on Sunday, contributing to yet another record-breaking season for three-pointers in the NBA.

Harden’s deep shot with 5:23 left in the second quarter of the Los Angeles Clippers’ 127-122 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers marked the 30,000th three-pointer made in the league this season.

Harden was a fitting player to hit this milestone, given his own place in NBA history. Earlier this season, the veteran sharpshooter joined Stephen Curry as the only players to surpass 3,000 career regular-season three-pointers when he sank his 60th of the season in a win over Denver on December 1.

This achievement extends the streak of consecutive seasons with at least 30,000 made threes to four. Before the 2021-22 season, this benchmark had never been reached.

The reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics are playing a key role in this three-point explosion. The Celtics have already made 1,323 three-pointers this season, just 40 away from matching the single-season record set by the Golden State Warriors in 2021-22.

Additionally, Boston has attempted 3,574 three-pointers, putting them 147 short of the Houston Rockets' 2018-19 record. With eight games remaining, Boston is on pace to surpass both records within the next week.

The NBA as a whole is also set to rewrite history. The current record for total three-pointers made in a season stands at 31,579, set last year, while the record for attempts (86,535) was established in the 2021-22 season. Entering Sunday’s games, the league was on track to finish the season with approximately 33,200 made threes and around 92,250 attempts.
