Newcastle United are expected to monitor the situation at Southampton closely in the coming weeks, with the Saints braced for a transfer overhaul.

The Magpies are one of several clubs keen on young Southampton star Tyler Dibling, with the midfielder likely to be avalilable in the summer. The Saints appear doomed to relegation back to the Championship, sitting bottom of the Premier League table on just nine points, with nine games to play.

While there is plenty of realism about their short-term future at the south coast club, with technical director Johannes Spors is already making big plans for the summer, which will include a large number of transfers both in and out of St Mary's. Dibling will be their most wanted star, but an initial price of around £100m is expected to drop significantly.

“I think we can do a lot in the window and we have to do a lot," Spors said. "We will be very, very active and I'm really looking forward to that. Bringing talent to this club is absolutely crucial. On the pitch, off the pitch. Off the pitch, I don't mean just head coach. I mean talent in the scouting, recruitment, analytics. We want people that want to grow. We need this energy of development.”

Newcastle are keen on the 19-year-old, as they look to bring the best of young English talent to the North East, following in the footsteps of Anthony Gordon, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento, with Dibling also a team-mate of Lewis Miley at England Under-19 level.

How much Southampton will demand for Dibling remains to be seen, but it is thought it will be less than the £100m they quoted to put off potential suitors in January. Aaron Ramsdale, Kyle Walker-Peters, Yukinari Sugawara and Mateus Fernandes could also head for the St Mary's exit door, with Saints looking to fund a summer spend on a squad capable of winning promotion and staying in the Premier League.
