Jacob Murphy on 'special day' at bus parade after being written off in past

Murphy, who set up the winning goal in the Carabao Cup final for Alexander Isak, told supporters –  and the council –  that more trophies (and more parades) were on the way after the club broke its 70-year domestic trophy drought.

“From being a little boy, that's more what you envision it like. But driving through there, I didn't expect it to be quite as spectacular as it was,” the winger said.

“I think the Newcastle fans, the council, everyone's probably going to have to get used to this.

“We spoke about it so much –  being the first. Now that the club's on this trajectory, I think titles, accomplishments like this will be happening more frequently. But to be the first, I think it makes it even more special.

“Especially for seven decades of nothing, being the first, that's the important one.”

Murphy, like defender Dan Burn, thought that his time to shine at Newcastle had come and gone after a couple of loan spells away from the club led some to believe that he had been written off in black and white.

But a revitalised stint in the squad under Eddie Howe has made Murphy one of the first names on the team sheet at points during the last 12 months and being on the bus was everything he dreamed of.

His childhood was filled with dreams of playing for Newcastle, but the sticky parts of his career at the club still stay with him now.

“There was one point where everyone thought that it was my time to go. I never thought that.
