Rangers could be set to part ways with several members of the first-team squad this summer.

After a dismal campaign, Rangers are hoping for a new dawn next season as the club edges closer to a takeover from 49ers Enterprises.

This takeover could see Rangers hire a new manager, despite Barry Ferguson impressing in an interim role, while there also needs to be a major squad overhaul.

A number of first-team players could depart to make way for new signings, and this could put an end to Cyriel Dessers’ time in Scotland.

Dessers likely to leave Rangers

Although Dessers has scored some important goals in recent weeks, it is clear that the Nigerian is not a good fit for Rangers going forward.

Gary Keown has now claimed (Daily Mail, 31 March) that Dessers could be out of the door once the new era at Ibrox begins, and that the 30-year-old could have even departed before.

“Dessers could have been sold last summer or in winter too,” Keown claimed.

“There was talk of a £5m offer from MLS side Atlanta United in August and links with Serie A in January.

“He’ll surely be on his way when the new broom sweeps in.”

Rangers need to learn lessons from failed sales

Dessers is a player most Rangers fans agree needs to move on this summer, but the club must now be more ruthless when it comes to selling players.

At 30, Dessers is only going to decline in value, and it seems unlikely that he will command a £5m fee in this upcoming window.

Had Rangers sold him last summer, they could have made a profit on the striker and proactively replaced Dessers with a younger and better option.

Dessers has scored 45 goals in 100 games for Rangers, which is not a bad record, but he has consistently missed big chances, and his overall performances have left a lot to be desired in his two seasons at Ibrox.

The perfect example was in the 4-3 win over Dundee, where Dessers did score the winner, but he could have easily put the game to bed with his 12 efforts on goal beforehand.

Time will tell how big the change will be at Ibrox.
