Liverpool quoted£40 million for defensive target

Leaders Liverpool host Merseyside rivals Everton in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

The Reds currently sit 12 points clear at the top of the table with just nine games remaining, however that advantage could be cut to nine points if second-placed Arsenal defeat Fulham on Tuesday evening.

Head coach Arne Slot will be pleased with his side’s performances so far this season, despite the reds exiting the Champions League and losing in the Carabao Cup final over the past month.

Despite this, Liverpool are on course to win the Premier League title for just the second time in the club’s history, following their success under Jurgen Klopp in 2020.

Off the pitch, three key players continue to face uncertainty surrounding their futures at Anfield.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are all currently set to be out of contract this summer, and it appears that the club have identified a potential replacement for the latter.

According to Football Insider, the Reds have been informed that an offer of around £40 million could be enough to lure Jorrel Hato away from current side Ajax.

Hato is a target for Liverpool ahead of this summer’s transfer window

Hato, 19, has been in fine form for the Amsterdam outfit this season and his impressive displays have attracted interest from elsewhere.

Liverpool have identified the teenager as a potential target as they contend with Van Dijk’s possible departure, although the report claims that Liverpool could still pursue a move even if their captain does stay put on Merseyside.

The young defender is a product of the successful Ajax youth system, and has now played more than 100 times for the club at senior level.

He has also been caped by The Netherlands on the international stage, and the report claims that Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid are all also interested in the Dutchman.

Hato – whose current contract with Ajax is set to run until the end of the 2027/28 campaign – can play as either a left-back or in the centre of defence.
