Bhopal: Dr. Rekha Raghuvanshi, a neurology DM (Doctorate of Medicine) student at Gajra Raja Medical College (GRMC) in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her hostel room.

Her body was reportedly found hanging in Room 218 of the Yamuna Girls Hostel. However, her family has raised serious doubts about the possibility of suicide, citing inconsistencies in the reports.

They assert that Rekha’s body had already been brought down before police arrived, and no photographic evidence exists to confirm that she was found hanging. Additionally, the alleged suicide involved a three-foot-high grill, further fueling suspicions of foul play.

Investigation underway

According to Kampoo police station in-charge Rudra Pathak, a detailed investigation is ongoing, with the post-mortem report expected to provide clarity. Pathak confirmed that Rekha’s body had already been removed by the time police arrived, raising further questions about how and by whom this was done. Insiders have pointed out that only a male individual could have brought the body down, sparking concerns about how such a person could have gained access to the girls’ hostel.

Additionally, authorities are investigating why the police were not informed before the body was removed. Reports suggest that a fellow doctor had tried to call Rekha, but when she did not answer, an alert was raised.

College’s response and family’s doubts

GRMC Dean Dr. R.K.S. Dhakad told IANS that upon learning Rekha was unresponsive to phone calls and had been found hanging, he immediately went to the scene with the hostel warden and other staff around midnight. He then contacted the superintendent of police, who arrived shortly thereafter.

Dr. Dhakad noted that Rekha had never reported any grievances and was regarded as a brilliant and dedicated professional. The institution has a “Student Grievance Cell” to support students facing stress or other issues. Insiders also revealed that she had participated in a college program on Saturday afternoon and appeared cheerful at the time.

In light of Rekha’s tragic death, the college has formed an internal panel, led by Dr. Dhakad and senior doctors, to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Any findings suggesting foul play will be reported to legal authorities.

Rekha, a 31-year-old from Madhna Khiriya village in Ashok Nagar, had joined GRMC in January 2024. Her sudden death has left her family and the medical community searching for answers.
