Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans!

Hang on; I have to wait for the second cup of coffee to kick in... be right back,

(long pause)

Hello! Thanks for waiting. One of my secrets to writing a daily bloviation on the Cleveland Browns, a supremely disappointing professional football club, is that I need the caffeine level in my bloodstream to hit a certain level before writing. This is as opposed to subjecting myself to the actual football games they play, which require a blood level concentration of a different chemical compound.

But now that the second cup of coffee has been created and partially consumed, I'm here to tell you about all the fascinating information released at yesterday's "NFL owners' meetings." I guess these should be called something else because the owners drag along all their top people, even though they have other things to do. Maybe "The NFL Big Shots Meeting". Yeah, that will work.

One of the challenges to covering the NFL Big Shots Meeting is that it's generally located at a nice resort that is not in Cleveland, which means that it requires money to travel to cover. Unfortunately, everyone gets the same information (generally watered-down hints about what the team might do in the draft). I refuse to send Fred Greetham to any place remotely enjoyable, so the OBR typically doesn't send anyone down there.

As sure as the world continues to exist, there are a few local sites on hand so that they can all relay the same information, which some of them put behind paywalls in a futile attempt to pry cash out of the hands of readers to help fund their operations. Since the same information is readily available for free elsewhere, either from sites without paywalls or aggregators swiping the material, this is usually an excuse not to have anyone read their contributions. But who am I to tell people how to do their business? No one, that's who.

In any event, Andrew Berry spoke to the media yesterday, offering a couple of updates of some note, assuming you're willing to believe anything said by an NFL front-office operative at this point in the season. (I'm not, hence the tone of this morning's screed).

One of the things that the Cleveland Browns General Manager told his Boswells is that he considers it "unlikely" that the Browns would trade up a spot to grab the top pick in the draft, ostensibly to acquire Miami QB Cam Ward. Since the Tennessee Titans, who currently hold the top pick, are asking for gobs of first-round selections to give up Ward, this remains an unsurprising remark. In any event, Berry would want to say this to depress any expectations that they consider the Titan's price reasonable.

Berry also said about the crucial decision at the #2 pick that they're open to just about anything, which is again exactly what you expect a General Manager to say at this point in the process. They would still like to hear offers for their pick and create mystery about what they will do for various reasons. He did say that the room will "skew young" (read: a younger player will be added to no one's surprise) and that a veteran bridge quarterback could be added before the NFL Draft but might be added after the draft. Or during the draft, one assumes.

The most interesting thing that Berry said concerned linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who suffered a scary neck injury that knocked him out of the 2024 season. Berry said that his return was "nebulous" regarding the timeframe, which, once more, continues what we've heard to date. I'd consider any play from JOK in 2025 to be a happy surprise. The full tweet on Berry's comments is captured on the next page of this Massive Morning Missive, as are various articles on his remarks.

Sorry that my tone this morning was so dismissive about the "news" we got from the luxurious (and therefore, Fred-free) confines of the NFL Big Shot Meetings. Decades of relaying what was said there has led to a certain level of cynicism on my part about how excited we should be about pronouncements at this stage of the game.

But now I've got a bloodstream full of caffeine and am running in circles. Back to the grand coding project.

Have a good one! GO BROWNS!

It may be that a certain bloviator of minimal renown may have consumed a lot of bourbon and beer in his younger days, to the extent that his doctors advise him to be careful with the booze. I'm not saying it is true, mind you, but it could be, to the extent that said bloviator might find this sort of information to be encouraging. Again, it's all hypothetical. But if that was the case, this might qualify as today's LIft.
