Ricardo, Daka – Leicester City injury update ahead of Manchester City clash

Ricardo Pereira is hoping to fight his way back from injury and take a place in the Leicester City squad at Manchester City on Wednesday.

The Portuguese full-back was absent with a minor issue for City's 3-0 defeat to Manchester United before the international break.

He had only returned from four months out with a hamstring tear in the game prior, coming on as a substitute against Chelsea.

He’s not been able to train over the international break but manager Ruud van Nistelrooy said he’d hoped Ricardo would be involved at Seagrave on Monday and Tuesday to give him a shot at making the squad on Wednesday.

Asked if he had any injury issues, van Nistelrooy said at his press conference on Monday morning: “Yes, we had Ricardo Pereira out for the United game.

“But he’s doing really well, hopefully we can get him on the training pitch with the team today and tomorrow and see if he’s ready for Wednesday.”

Van Nistelrooy did not suggest he had any further injuries, meaning that if Ricardo is passed fit, then it will just be Abdul Fatawu (knee) who is out.

Striker Patson Daka will be available too, and could start for a third game in a row, with no issues over his work permit.

With only Fatawu out, van Nistelrooy would have to leave four fit senior players out of his squad at the Etihad Stadium.

At Chelsea, Jannik Vestergaard, Oliver Skipp, Odsonne Edouard and Kasey McAteer were the quartet to miss out, with McAteer back involved in Ricardo’s place against United.

That will also stop young players from making the squad, despite a few, including Jeremy Monga, Jake Evans and promising full-back Bade Aluko training with the first team during the international break.

“We had 14 or 15 players still here,” van Nistelrooy said. “We had less players away than we had in. We had a big group.

“We added the young players that are doing really well, also Jeremy Monga and Jake Evans among others. They had a good week with the first team.

“Everybody had a good week, after that some time off, and then we picked up last Thursday.”
