It has been some turnaround for Jordan Henderson at Ajax. The 34-year-old joined the Amsterdam club in January 2024 after ending his short stint in the Saudi Pro League.

Henderson had a mixed start to life at Ajax, making just nine Eredivise appearances before the end of the 2023/24 season. He started this campaign in and out of the starting XI under new head coach Francesco Farioli, but has always remained a dependable option when called upon.

When starting, Henderson was the Ajax captain and it felt as though he was growing into an important player as they fought at the top of the Eredivisie and in the Europa League.

However, back in January, speculation intensified that Henderson was prepared to quit Ajax and join Monaco on a deal until 2026. Fabrizio Romano even suggested that Monaco were 'closing in' on signing Henderson.

But Henderson performed a U-Turn and instead committed his future to Ajax until at least the end of the season. It's a move that is looking like the right decision now, as Ajax close in on the Eredivisie title.

Ajax fans fumed when rumours emerged that Henderson could be jumping ship to Monaco, but he has since appeared to win them over. Henderson was lauded on social media after captaining Ajax to a 2-0 win over PSV on Sunday and was greeted by supporters on the team bus following the game.

One fan on X, formerly known as Twitter, said: "Henderson. Great captain. Will leave the Eredivisie after 1.5 seasons knowing that he has not left the field as a loser in a single top match." Another added: "Just a shout-out to Henderson. That man is so important! I really hope he stays after this season."

A third wrote: "That Henderson, what a leader he is!! So important again today." A fourth said: "Henderson shows once again that he is a key player for this Ajax. Incredibly important, both on and off the field, but we already knew that. Alex Kroes will have to think very carefully this summer about whether he wants to let him go..."

Many others showed their appreciation for Henderson and it does feel like his Ajax career has turned a corner after those transfer rumours. He has started in each of Ajax's last two matches and played the full 90 minutes as they beat closest rivals PSV 2-0 at Philips Stadion on Sunday.

Goals from Davy Klaasen and Bertrand Traore ensured that Ajax moved eight points clear at the top of Eredivisie with just seven matches to go. At this stage, considering PSV's inconsistencies and off-field issues, it's looking almost nailed on that Ajax are going to win the title.

If Ajax get over the line, it would represent just Henderson's second career league title - five years since lifting the Premier League at Liverpool. He would become a hero, if not a legend, at Ajax and add to the list of players to have led the club to glory, establishing themselves as the most successful club in the Netherlands.
