With doubt surrounding his future at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic has said that remaining at Strasbourg past the summer “could be a very good option.”
Strong Season of Djordje Petrovic at Strasbourg
With Robert Sanchez selected as Chelsea’s main goalkeeper for the 2024/25 season, the Serbian shot-stopper came Strasbourg on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day. Petrovic has established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper, starting all but three Ligue 1 games this season, since joining the Todd Boehly-owned French side.
His steady performances have made him a major player for Strasbourg, and he has greatly developed under their approach. Emphasizing going out from the back and taking measured risks, the 25-year-old has adjusted nicely to the squad’s playing style.
Chelsea’s Goalkeeping Conundrum
Chelsea have had major goalkeeping issues even if Petrovic excels in France. His performances have drawn much criticism, especially from first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who has made several expensive mistakes during a challenging season for the Blues. In the end, his difficulties caused him to be dropped last month in favor of Filip Jorgensen.
Though Sanchez came back to Chelsea’s starting lineup for their most recent loss to Arsenal, his long-term future at the club still in question. This has fueled rumors that Petrovic would come back to Stamford Bridge to compete for the number one position for next season.

Djordje Petrovic Concentrated on Strasbourg but Open to Staying
Petrovic is concentrated on finishing the season with Strasbourg even if Chelsea presents a possible opening. Speaking before their next match against Lyon, he said he was happy with his progress and suggested a possible permanent stay.
Every goalkeeper hopes to save. I strive daily to get better so I can be present on the pitch when my colleagues need me, Petrovic said to the media.
Before I arrived to Strasbourg, I had developed into a more complete goalkeeper. The coach really motivates us to take chances and use the ball. It calls for great focus and attention to detail. This also originates from the staff members, who provide us great confidence.
Before deciding on his future, Petrovic underlined again that he is still dedicated to concluding the season on a positive note.
I have always believed in my capacity to advance. I have advanced more than I had hoped. Before the season’s end, I still have some room to grow. My goal is to complete the season in the best feasible manner. We’ll see what this summer brings to pass. If Strasbourg plays in the Champions League, remaining might be quite good.
Strasbourg Coach Supports Djordje Petrovic as ‘World-Class’ Goaltender
Liam Rosenior, head coach of Strasbourg, has praised Petrovic as a ‘world-class’ goalkeeper in the making. Rosenior said the team had early hopes for Petrovic and has been happy with his growth.
Rosenior remarked, “I’m not shocked by Petro’s development.” At the beginning of the season, we told him that where we hope to take him will be challenging. He is now far more self-assured. He is more in tune with the on-field players. His performance today demonstrates that he is a world-class goalie. Should this trend persist, he might develop into a very, very good goalkeeper.
Djordje Petrovic and Chelsea: What Comes Next?
Given the goalkeeping problems at Chelsea, a return for Petrovic is still on the table as the club tries to rebuild under Enzo Maresca. Strasbourg, on the other hand, may entice the Serbian goalkeeper to stay in France should it qualify for European football next season.
Developments will be closely watched by Chelsea supporters since Petrovic’s choice can greatly affect the goalkeeping department for the following season. Will the Blues let him shine at Stamford Bridge or will Strasbourg persuade him to prolong his visit? Time will tell just.
