According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle United are one of the clubs in the race to sign LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David this summer when he becomes a free agent.
An impactful summer transfer window is expected on Tyneside after a historic season for Newcastle, and it will be down to Paul Mitchell to keep that winning mentality alive with the right recruitment.
The Magpies are currently sixth in the Premier League table ahead of their return to action against Brentford on Wednesday night at St James’ Park, with still a huge opportunity to make celebrations even sweeter by qualifying for Champions League football.
It is expected that English clubs will qualify for five Champions League spots this summer, and Newcastle are in a great position to finish in the top five as they are currently only two points behind Chelsea in fourth.
Indeed, the current squad have cemented their names in the history of the club forever following their Carabao Cup success, but realistically significant investment in the squad will be needed to continue their progression.
There will be several areas of the pitch that Mitchell will be looking to add depth and quality to ahead of next season, but the attacking threat is likely to take priority despite boasting one of the most talked about strikers in the world right now.
Alexander Isak has been aggressively linked to a move away from Tyneside over the last few weeks, with clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal desperate to snatch his world-class services from the North East.
Not only that, Callum Wilson is yet to commit his future to the club with an expiring contract running down in the business end of the season and it is unclear whether the club are interested in offering the 33-year-old an extension.
It is being reported by TEAMtalk that Newcastle are battling to sign LOSC Lille star Jonathan David this summer, with the talented forward set to be out of contract and attracting a lot of interest from potential suitors.
The Magpies are not the only Premier League club vying for his signature as Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea have all also made contact to establish David’s situation and future plans.
Should Newcastle sign Jonathan David?
It is undeniable that David will be one of the most sought after forwards in Europe this summer, not only due his consistency and quality but because he is an incredible asset available as a free agent.
The 25-year-old Canadian has amassed 107 goals for Lille over his 225 appearances, averaging a goal every 159 minutes played so far which is a fantastic level of output that would be warmly welcomed at St James’ Park.
Indeed, Wilson has been a loyal and confident performer in front of goal for Newcastle over the years but he is not only coming to the latter stages of his career he struggles to stay fit, making him unreliable for rotation with Alexander Isak when fixtures are congested.
The only sticking point in Newcastle’s pursuit for David would be offering the game time he will desire moving away from Lille, something that would not be promised in the striker role due to Isak cementing himself as the first choice.
With that being said, it will be interesting to see if David could be tempted to join the exciting project at Newcastle next season to compete with Isak for minutes or whether he will seek out guaranteed first team football elsewhere.
