Once Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox return to the lineup next season, the San Antonio Spurs are expected to be in the playoff picture. A starting five of Fox, Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and Harrison Barnes with Jeremy Sochan, Keldon Johnson, and two high-level rookies coming off the bench would make for an excellent young lineup.
However, the Spurs have been one of the many teams linked to Kevin Durant. At the same time, the fanbase seems divided, mostly because Durant is 36 years old, adding him next to Wemby and Fox would make the Spurs immediate title threats.
However, the Suns are reportedly asking for three draft picks and a young player. The Spurs have picks in spades, but would they be willing to give up a member of their core?
Castle was made untouchable in the Fox trade talks with the Sacramento Kings, so it's reasonable to assume the Spurs would be reluctant to trade him, although Durant is a better player than Castle.
"One dark-horse team worth mentioning in connection to Durant is the San Antonio Spurs," wrote *ClutchPoints*Brett Siegel. "After just making a big move to pair De'Aaron Fox with Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs are poised to make even more moves this offseason."
The reason for adding Durant is clear, although depending on who the Spurs give up, it could limit their window.
"There have been whispers among league personnel about the possibility of the Spurs pursuing Durant and creating the best offensive trio in the league next to Fox and Wembanyama," Siegel finished.
The league insider then mentioned Vassell and Barnes as being the Spurs' best trade chips. If the Spurs could add Durant for the low price of Barnes, Vassell, and perhaps Blake Wesley, as well as three draft picks, it's hard to argue against that. Durant would take over Vasssell's scoring duties, Sochan could slot into the lineup, and the Spurs would presumably keep one of their two picks in the 2025 draft, being able to address either the backup center situation or the wing void.

The Spurs have eight picks between 2025 and 2031, so they would manage to keep five after this hypothetical deal, allowing them to further add talent down the line after Durant retires.
Of course, the Spurs would only agree to a deal if Durant signed a contract beyond just next season, all but guaranteeing that he would finish his career in San Antonio.
