Ruben Amorim says Manchester United are looking upwards and can end the season on a high after overcoming a tough start to his reign. United are currently down in 13th place in the Premier League and go to third-placed Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, looking to win back-to-back league games for the first time this season.

But rather than looking behind them, Amorim said United can now start to look above and build on the momentum of their last game – a 3-0 win away at Leicester before the international break. “I'm really confident,” said Amorim. “I feel that the players are more confident, the energy is different, but I also know that this could change with the results.

“So we are focused on maintaining the energy, we've worked on some things we have a lot to improve. Even winning the games, we can acknowledge that we have a lot to improve on. But we are in a different moment, we are more confident and ready for these final two months of the season.

“I don't know in which place we are going to finish, but we are looking up and we want to win games. We still have matches to finish in a different position. We have more confidence, so we are looking up and we want to win games – that is our focus at the moment.”

After Forest, United host Manchester City in the derby on Sunday, followed by the first leg of their Europa League semi-final away to Lyon. United then travel to Newcastle, followed by the second leg against Lyon, with Amorim acknowledging the difficulty of the five-match run, but confident his players are ready for it.

“It's really exciting because we have really tough matches, but we already had that kind of schedule in the last few weeks, with fewer players,” said Amorim. “So it's really important to have all the players available, for them to fight, for us to rotate during matches, and different characteristics give us different opportunities to win matches.

“But I think it's a very good moment in our season. I know that we will have at least three games in the Premier League now that are really tough, but I think the team is prepared to face those games. The Europa League is also a key point for us in this final run.”

Forest went to extra-time on Saturday before Nuno Espirito Santo's side beat Brighton on penalties to reach the FA Cup semi-finals. But Amorim is not sure that will be a huge advantage for United, who have not played for a fortnight.

“I don’t know,” said Amorim. “Nuno will say it was better to have more time to prepare for the game and I can say it was a long time for us without games. But they played that FA Cup game, they won and it's really important to recover players, so the environment will be really nice.”
