As Real Sociedad prepares to face [Real Madrid](https://www.managingmadrid.com) in the decisive second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final, their club legend Xabi Prieto has shared his thoughts on his experiences playing at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu. Speaking on Real Sociedad’s official YouTube channel, Prieto recounted the highs and lows of his career at one of football’s most intimidating venues.

“It’s not easy to have good memories of such a difficult stadium,” Prieto admitted. “But well, the first time I played there we won 1-4, and they were my first goals. I have very good memories of that night.”

However, not every trip to the Bernabéu was as joyful. The former captain was quick to recall the harsh realities of facing Real Madrid on their home turf.

“We have suffered thrashings, but it’s true that it is a stadium that deceives. There are moments when you feel very good because they let you have the ball and feel comfortable. Then you look at the scoreboard and say: ‘I’m comfortable, but I’m losing 5-0.’”

Prieto’s most memorable individual performance against Real Madrid came when he scored the only hat-trick of his career, a feat that remains a standout moment despite the result.

“I didn’t even remember at first,” Prieto said. “Maybe it’s because we ended up losing 4-3. On top of that, we played against 10 men for almost the entire match, but Cristiano Ronaldo was there, and he scored two. They need very little to hurt you.

“The Bernabéu is a special place, and moments like these are why you play football,” Prieto concluded. “I hope Real Sociedad can create another unforgettable memory for our fans.”
