Surprising NFL coach supports Tush Push ban

Though the Eagles are the architects of the “Tush Push,” the Bills are another team that’s run it exceptionally well.

That’s not stopping Sean McDermott from supporting a ban on the play at this week’s league meetings. The Buffalo coach doesn’t believe the play — a quarterback being pushed from behind on a sneak — is safe.

“My biggest concern is the health and safety with the players, first and foremost,” McDermott said.

McDermott cited “added force” and “posture of players” as reasons he doesn’t believe it’s safe. Though he acknowledged there isn’t significant data on the play, McDermott believes it’s best to make changes before injuries occur.

“I’m not a doctor, so I’m not gonna get too deep into that situation in terms of how much data, how much sample,” McDermott said. “I don’t think that’s really always the best way to go. There’s other data out there that suggests when you’re in a posture like we’re talking about, that can lead to serious injury. I think being responsible and proactive in that regard is the right way to go.”

The Green Bay Packers initially proposed the ban, and they’ll need votes from 24 of the league’s 32 teams to get the play abolished. McDermott said the Bills will continue to run “a form of it” if the rule is changed.
