Gyokeres breaks silence after Arsenal transfer update and Berta announcement

Viktor Gyokeres posted on social media for the first time in three weeks this weekend after reports said that Arsenal are developing a strong interest in the striker.

football.london understands the Sweden international is someone the Gunners held an interest in before the summer transfer window last year. They closely followed the player's progress during his first season at Sporting CP.

Gyokeres scored 44 goals and assisted another 15 across 51 appearances for club and country during that campaign. He has already surpassed those respective tallies this term, with 51 goals and 15 assists in 48 games before April begins.

Three of his goal contributions came during the 3-0 win against Estrela in Amadora on Saturday night. Gyokeres opened the scoring against Sporting's ten-man opponents from the penalty spot.

He also helped them double their advantage with a flick to soon-to-be Chelsea player Geovany Quenda. The striker then again converted from 12 yards late on - going the same way, hard and low into the bottom left corner - after being hauled down while trying to get off a shot.

Those were his 16th and 17th penalty goals of the season - not including the one he scored during a shootout with Benfica in the Portuguese League Cup final.

Gyokeres, comparably, scored eight times from the spot last term, missing just once, which Young Boys goalkeeper David von Ballmoos saved during the second leg of their Europa League knockout round play-off tie, which Sporting were leading 4-0 on aggregate.

The striker has made no mistakes during the 13 months since and after his latest goals. He posted a photo of him celebrating one of them with his usual celebration, where he links his fingers and covers his mouth with both hands.

His caption on that Instagram post reads: "Good to be back," punctuated by emojis of two hands that somewhat look how his do when celebrating.

That was his first post since the second Sunday of this month, after a 3-1 win over Casa Pia, in which Gyokeres scored twice.

The player did not post after their 3-1 home win over Famalicao, in which he scored one goal and assisted another.

In the aftermath of that match, he withdrew from the Sweden squad for friendlies against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland.

Their head coach, Jon Dahl Tomasson, explained: "Viktor has a little bit of pain and has had an adapted training last week. We don't want to take any risks."
