Goal hero outlines Aston Villa 'priority' after big FA Cup win

Sunday’s 3-0 win at Preston in the FA Cup added a Wembley semi-final date to an already exciting schedule for Unai Emery’s team, who next week take on Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of a Champions League quarter-final.

But first up are critical top-flight clashes with Brighton and Preston as Villa, who sit ninth in the Premier League table, aim to secure a return to Europe’s elite club competition for next season.

Despite indifferent league form, Villa sit just three points adrift of fifth-placed Manchester City, who occupy the final place likely to be enough for Champions League football.

Ramsey, who netted his fourth goal of the season in the win at Preston, said: “The next two months need to be our best two months of the season.

“That’s what the boss keeps saying – we’ve got big games in the Champions League against PSG.

“But also the games this week against Brighton and Forest – they are massive games for us trying to get back in the Champions League next season.”

Villa travel to seventh-placed Brighton, two points above them in the standings, on Wednesday before hosting third-placed Forest on Saturday evening.

Asked if the Premier League was still the top priority, despite the club’s progress in cup competitions, Ramsey replied: “Even in pre season the boss made it very clear the Premier League is the main goal. The other competitions come after.

“As players you love playing in the Champions League and you always want to be focused but the boss is so good at reminding us – what we do in the Champions League this year doesn’t matter if we don’t qualify for next year. So for us players, it’s Premier League.”

That won’t stop Ramsey dreaming of what will be his first-ever appearance at Wembley when Villa take on Crystal Palace in the last week in April for a place in the FA Cup final.

The 23-year-old academy product has shown signs of getting back to his best after a frustrating 18-month spell hampered by injury.

Ramsey was at Wembley when Villa played in the 2015 Cup semi-final and final and then again for the play-off final when promotion was secured in 2019.

He said: “For me it’s a little bit more special – growing up as a Villa fan.

“I’ve been to Wembley three times. Semi-final and final in the Cup and then the play-off.

“I remember watching Jack (Grealish) – one of his standout performances when he was really young against Liverpool. The final against Arsenal. The play-off final against Derby.

“But this will be my first one in the squad so I’m going to enjoy it, my family will be coming.”

He continued: “I spoke after the Celtic game and I felt then it (my form) was coming, it’s so hard coming back from injury after injury.

“You feel like you are getting there and then you get another niggle. So fingers crossed now that I can keep going.”
