How much money Newcastle United will earn if they qualify for the Uefa Champions League

Newcastle United have 10 Premier League games remaining to try and book a spot in the Uefa Champions League.

After Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup trophy parade over the weekend, Eddie Howe will be eager to avert attention back to the Premier League.

Newcastle are currently sixth in the Premier League table and resume their league campaign on Wednesday against Brentford.

By winning the Carabao Cup, Newcastle have already qualified for the Conference League, but the aim for the business end of the season will be to return to the Champions League.

Newcastle have finally gotten around to easing their PSR issues this season by growing revenue – and the club’s income will soar even higher if they can return to the Champions League.

During the 2022/23 season, Newcastle earned £30m from Champions League football despite exiting the competition in the group stage.

Newcastle’s latest revenue was £320m, so qualifying for the Champions League nearly makes up 10% of the club’s entire income.

For the 2025/26 season, Uefa have pledged a prize pool of just over £2bn for teams competing in the Champions League.

According to The Athletic, the minimum prize money Newcastle would earn if they qualified for the Champions League is £17m, while the maximum prize money for a contender is £131m.

Competing in Europe will continue to help Newcastle climb Uefa’s coefficient table, with the Magpies currently 85th in the rankings. A higher ranking means higher payouts in future seasons.

How Champions League will impact Newcastle transfers

Having made a net profit last summer and in January, Newcastle are already in a good financial position to invest this summer regardless of what European competition they qualify for.

But if Newcastle can qualify for the Champions League with a top-five Premier League finish, it will boost the budget available to sporting director Paul Mitchell.

Europe’s best players naturally want to play in Europe’s best competition, so Newcastle being in the Champions League will help the club land marquee signings.

Additionally, Alexander Isak wants Champions League qualification in order to sign a new contract. Finishing in the top five this season will not only help Newcastle keep hold of their biggest stars, but could also help them agree long-term deals to keep them at St James’ Park.

PIF launched ‘Project 2030’ at Newcastle this month and their aim is for the club to be regularly in the Champions League and even contending for the trophy by the end of the decade.
