Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said he’s interested in accepting an invitation to the White House to celebrate his team’s 2019-20 season Super Bowl championship.
Hunt, who spoke at the NFL Annual Meetings on Monday afternoon, said he was honored when he heard President Donald Trump extended a recent offer to celebrate the Chiefs team that defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20, in Super Bowl LIV.
Because of COVID-19, that team never made a White House visit.
“We certainly would like to try to figure out how to make that happen,” Hunt said Monday afternoon at The Breakers Palm Beach. “There are obviously some additional logistical challenges that we would face, given that we only have six players from that roster that are still on the team.”
The Chiefs that remain from that squad are quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, defensive end Chris Jones, defensive tackle Mike Pennel, long snapper James Winchester and kicker Harrison Butker.
Trump revealed he was looking to bring the old Chiefs team to the White House during a recent interview with OutKick’s Clay Travis. Trump said this year’s Super Bowl LIX champions — the Philadelphia Eagles — would visit Washington, D.C. first, but after that, he was looking to bring in the 2019-20 Chiefs “because they missed their turn.”
Hunt said Trump’s gesture was “completely unexpected” and “very thoughtful of him.”
“We’re in discussions right now about trying to do something this year,” Hunt said, “and just what that would look like.”
The Chiefs last visited the White House last May after their 2023-24 Super Bowl LVIII championship — and overtime win — over the 49ers. Joe Biden welcomed KC’s players and coaches then while also putting on a Chiefs helmet during brief remarks.
Hunt said he hoped the Chiefs could make a return trip to the Presidential Mansion in 2025 while overcoming any potential obstacles.
“We’re working through those with the White House,” Hunt said, “and hopefully we’ll be able to make it work.”
