Culturally and locally significant art to welcome Grb visitors flying in for the NFL Draft

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - GRB is partnering with the Oneida Nation Arts Program (ONAP) to install 22 pieces of artwork across the airport from eight Indigenous artists from the Oneida community.

The artwork includes media such as acrylic paintings, historical photographs, textiles, beadwork, sculptures, and basketry.

Each design offers insight into the artist’s story and the community’s history in a creative and unique way.

The artists selected for this exhibit were the 2024 Woodland Indian Art Show & Market winners, along with Oneida’s 2024 National Treasures.

When travelers land at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB), they get a glimpse into the history and culture of the Northeast Wisconsin and Upper Michigan regions.

One of the initiatives to help promote local vendors includes the GRB Art Program, which strives to create an atmosphere for airport users that educates visitors about the cultural heritage and artistic development of the Green Bay area.

“The experience that visitors receive is thanks to the many partnerships and contributions of local vendors who help make GRB the perfect first stop while they explore our community,” said Airport Director Marty Piette. “The GRB Art Program gives us the chance to promote local artists, and the Oneida Nation is one of the amazing partners eager to highlight their beautiful work.”

The artwork was installed at the beginning of March and will be on display during the NFL Draft until April 30.

The Grand Lobby will include one display case, and each concourse will include display cases along with wall-hanging space.

“We’re excited to work together to highlight the amazing talent and vibrant culture of our local Indigenous communities,” said Oneida Nation Arts Program Supervisor Gabrielle Metoxen. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to share some Haudenosaunee art and traditions with travelers exploring Green Bay, and we truly appreciate this opportunity. “We want travelers to our region to feel immersed and welcomed into our community,” said Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach. “This partnership with Oneida Nation engages audiences and promotes local artists as the NFL Draft comes to town.”

GRB encourages travelers and local residents to enjoy the displays around the airport and learn more about artists in our area.
