Cowboys ‘Bust’ Talk On Dak Blocker Fuels Draft Rumor

It is important to remember how many options are on the table for the Dallas Cowboys at pick No. 12 in the NFL Draft. The team has a long list of needs, but only one player can be taken on Day 1 of the Draft.

Anything can happen.

No matter how much speculation swirls around big names at flashy positions like running back Ashton Jeanty or receiver Tetairoa McMillan, the Cowboys have still been known to surprise fans on draft night.

That was the case last year when Dallas traded back in the first round and ended up with two offensive lineman. It didn't generate the most buzz, but you can't argue how the move was an effort to fill a gap.

Dallas swapped their 24th pick for the 29th and 73rd pick, who turned into tackle Tyler Guyton and guard-turned-center Cooper Beebe.

Because of the Cowboys' continued lack of depth on the interior, this move could be in play again ... and might still be a good idea, regardless of how little it excites fans.

Rather than trade back, a recent mock draft has the Cowboys selecting LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell with the 12th pick.

"He's a smooth left tackle who may not have excellent length but has the movement skills and technique to be a rock-solid pass protector for Dak Prescott's blind side." The 33rd Team wrote about the prediction.

Campbell - who showed top-10 draft potential early in the 2024 college football season - is a solid pick, but his draft would mean the Cowboys are giving up on Guyton after just one season.

Guyton predominately played right tackle at Oklahoma, but since joining the Cowboys has transitioned to the left side. That move hasn't been without his fair share of struggles.

The 6-7 rookie committed 18 penalties in 2024, the second most among all tackles in the NFL. He also graded in the bottom half of the league in run and pass blocking, according to PFF.

If the Cowboys' front office agrees with many of the gripes about Guyton's production, Campbell could be a quick replacement via the Draft.

Campbell is already comfortable guarding the quarterback's blindside, and many scouts expect him to be a reliable starter early into his NFL career.

That blindside protection is crucial with the recovering Dak Prescott under center.

Prescott's injury history and Dallas' QB situation has already struck "panic" in multiple circles, so solidifying a left tackle could quiet those thoughts.

At the same time, this suggestion hints at the idea that Guyton is already a "bust." and that judgment seems a bit premature to us.

Prescott has only played two full seasons in his last five years, and both times Dallas won 11+ games. So the secret is keeping Dak healthy.

If the Cowboys' don't believe Guyton is the answer on the left side of the line, a surprising move in the first round could land a guy like Campbell at The Star to protect Dallas' $240 million man.
