Manchester United fans were full of praise for one “class” starlet during the Under-18s defeat in the FA Youth Cup against Aston Villa.

Manchester United’s under-18s entered their FA Youth Cup semi-final clash against Aston Villa as favourites. However, Villa struck early at Villa Park, with Trai-Varn Mulley capitalizing on a loose ball from a free-kick to open the scoring.

United responded well, controlling possession and equalizing before the half-hour mark through James Scanlon, who reacted quickest to Tyler Fletcher’s pass and finished confidently.

Despite their dominance, United struggled to break down Villa’s resilient defence, which remained a threat on the counter throughout the game.

A stop-start second half suited the hosts, leading to extra time. Villa had the better chances but failed to convert, and the match went to penalties, where they emerged victorious.

Mantato shines amid Amorim debut reports

Despite the result, there were several bright sparks for United in the game, including 17-year-old talent Bendito Mantato, who has gathered a lot of attention in the last week.

Mantato is reportedly set to sign a professional contract at Old Trafford in the coming weeks and Ruben Amorim wants to reward the player with a debut this season.

It has been claimed that Mantato could be an option for United at wingback and many fans tuned into the youth clash to see what he had to offer.

The England youth international came off the bench and immediately impressed on the right-wing. He had his fullback beaten on almost every occasion and created some danger from that area.

He was then moved to left-back – which showcased his flexibility and defensive abilities – but still managed to dance past three Villa players and almost create a huge chance in the closing stages.

United fans impressed by Mantato cameo

It was a positive display from Mantato, who impressed fans and a first-team debut will certainly be greatly anticipated.

“I’m finding it really hard not to get excited about Mantato. The kid looks class,” one fan wrote on social media platform X.

Another added: “Mantato will be a vital player for Manchester United under Ruben Amorim. Surely he is going to thrive under him.”

“Really can see why they didn’t go for Quenda when Mantato is here,” a third concluded.

United have nine remaining Premier League games this season and Mantato will be hoping that he can take to the pitch in that period.
