But the prospect of no European football next season looms worryingly large, and United may have to get away before the season is over to conclude deals for the players they want. And it appears that has already begun.

The expected turnover at the end of the season will also likely see a number of players leave the club, especially those who are in the final year of their contracts.

Here, the Daily Star Sport looks at the latest United transfer news.

Ajax are interested in re-signing midfielder Christian Eriksen on a free transfer in the summer, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The 33-year-old Dane looks set to leave United at the end of the summer when his contract expires and Ajax are open to bringing the playmaker back to Amsterdam, where he began his career.

Eriksen joined the Red Devils on a free transfer in 2022 and has been a solid acquisition, but time is starting to tell on the 142-time Denmark international.

Hugo Ekitike

United’s search for a striker could lead them towards Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike.

The 22-year-old has been impressive for the Bundesliga team since joining permanently from PSG at the start of the season in a bargain fee reportedly around £14m after spending the previous campaign on loan.

As per the Mirror, Frankfurt are wanting a £60m package for the French striker, who has 19 goals in 39 games in all competitions this season, with United, Arsenal and Liverpool all interested in his services.

However, United are said to hold a unique advantage over their rivals, with Ekitike a boyhood fan of the Red Devils.

The 19-year-old Senegal international has five goals in 12 games since arriving from Real Betis in January for £10.6m. His goals have come against teams of impressive calibre too, with him finding the net against AC Milan, Udinese, Juventus, Fiorentina and Napoli.

Following the game against Empoli, manager Cesc Fabregas singled Diao out for praise as he slammed his team.

Fabregas said: "The only player I liked today was Assane Diao, even though he only returned from international duty on Thursday. He was the only one who tried something. I think we can do much better."
