Simon Jordan has rubbished suggestions Liverpool duo Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez will be used as bait to sign Newcastle United talisman Alexander Isak.

Speculation regarding the Swede has threatened to derail Newcastle’s season. To Isak’s credit, he has ignored the noise to record his best numbers yet for the Magpies.

The 23-year-old is two shy of last season’s 25 strikes - in seven fewer games - and helped Newcastle end their 70-year domestic trophy drought earlier this month. Ironically, Isak scored against Liverpool in the Wembley final to give Arne Slot’s an uphill battle shortly after half-time.

Three years on his contract gives St James’ Park chiefs a strong negotiating hand should potential suitors come calling. A talkSPORT report last week suggested Liverpool were considering offering Quansah and Gomez as makeweight - a suggestion widely condemned by Newcastle circles on social media.

Speaking on the station, former Crystal Palace owner Jordan echoed their concern, insisting the deal does not make sense for the Magpies. He also warned Newcastle that a “legacy club” expressing genuine interest could unsettle their star striker.

“In order to get to the top they need turnovers as big as Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City,” Jordan said. “They can’t get it because they’re restricted from doing so. The only way they can get it is through sporting attainment and they can’t get sporting attainment because they can’t spend money due to PSR. So around and around they go.

The fortunate thing for them is I don’t think people have deep enough pockets to buy Isak. Newcastle have balance in this conversation (because of his contract). If anybody wants Isak, they’re going to have to pay for him.

“The legacy clubs? I don’t think they have the dough. If they want to buy Isak, they’re going to have to pay north of £125million. Barcelona don’t have the dough to do it. I’m not even sure Real Madrid have.

“And about players being thrown into the mix… why would they want to sell Isak to Liverpool to get Gomez and Quansah? You’re losing a forward to replace him with a defender. There’s your answer to that question. With all due respect to Newcastle, if one of the legacy clubs come, you’re going to be so disappointed when your player turns around and goes ‘I have an ear for this’.”
