Everton endured arguably the toughest season in their history last term, as the Premier League deducted eight points for financial mismanagement.

The Toffees battled relegation for most of the campaign but eventually survived by a comfortable margin of 14 points.

The fact that the newly promoted trio of Luton, Burnley, and Sheffield United failed to acclimatise to the Premier League certainly fell in Everton’s favour.

But the Toffees are now looking ahead to a bright future under new owners, The Friedkin Group, while they close in on their move from Goodison Park to Bramley-Moore Dock.

Farhad Moshiri hammered over Everton’s ‘desperate position’

Former Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri was responsible for the fact that the Blues fell short of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

After the latest accounts were published, The Esk reacted to the bleak numbers, writing: “The end of the financial year 2023/24 saw Everton in a desperate position with total debts including trade creditors (but not Moshiri’s shareholding loan), greater than £787 million.

“The toll of the Bramley-Moore build costs, along with lower than expected revenues as a result of poor performance on the pitch, and the failure to secure a purchaser before the Friedkin’s eventually acquired the club, almost put the club out of business.”

Toffees supporters will be grateful that their difficult period under Moshiri’s reign has come to an end, and will hope for stability under Friedkin, rather than nearly going out of business.

Everton will hope for a better season next term

Ultimately, the current campaign could be remembered as the season when Everton managed to get themselves back on track, as The Friedkin Group completed their purchase of the club, thus ending the struggles overseen by Moshiri.

Everton are on a strong unbeaten run

But the Toffees were in a relegation scrap earlier this term, too, which led to the sacking of former boss Sean Dyche, who was duly replaced by David Moyes.

Now in his second tenure as Blues boss, Moyes has turned the Merseyside outfit’s fortunes around as they have enjoyed a nine-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League ahead of Wednesday night’s derby with Liverpool.

The Toffees boss has shown signs that he can lead Everton back to brighter days, while supporters will hope that his first full season at Bramley-Moore Dock will be a positive one.

The Friedkins have already turned things around, financially too, with many of the loans repaid or on better payment plans, with a return to glory already looked at by fans.
