Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola will be without one of his star players against Manchester United on Sunday

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is set to miss Sunday’s derby with Manchester United at Old Trafford due to the ankle injury he suffered at Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon - it has been reported.

The Norwegian missed a penalty then scored the equaliser on the south coast as City won 2-1 to set up a semi-final with Nottingham Forest at Wembley. Haaland was withdrawn just after the hour as his ankle was caught under the weight of the falling Lewis Cook before the striker hit into the advertising boards at the Vitality Stadium.

He was replaced by Omar Marmoush, who netted the winning goal for Guardiola’s side. Haaland was seen leaving on crutches and with a protective boot. Now a report from The Times has claimed that the forward is set to miss most of the season - but City are confident of having him back for the Club World Cup.

Man City give Erling Haaland injury update

The report in The Times claims Haaland is ruled out of games against Leicester City and United this week and he is at risk of missing the FA Cup semi-final with Nottingham Forest, which takes place on April 26. City also play Crystal Palace and Everton in the Premier League before their trip to Wembley, making Haaland a doubt for both of those games also.

City gave an update on the player in a club statement on Monday evening, saying: “Manchester City FC can confirm that Erling Haaland has suffered an injury to his left ankle. The Norwegian striker sustained the injury during Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final victory away at AFC Bournemouth.

“Erling underwent initial tests in Manchester on Monday morning and will now seek specialist consultation to confirm the full extent of the injury. Assessment remains ongoing to ascertain a full prognosis. The expectation is that Erling will be fit in time to play a further part in the remainder of this season, including this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.”

Haaland goal-scoring record v Man Utd

Haaland has scored 30 goals in all competitions for City this season, with 21 of those coming in the Premier League. Since his move to City, Haaland has made eight appearances against United - scoring six goals and providing three assists. His most prolific performance came in early October 2022 as he scored a hat-trick and provided two assists as City beat their rivals 6-3 at the Etihad Stadium.

He scored in both games against United last season, as he scored twice and assisted once in a 3-0 win at Old Trafford and also found the net in a 3-1 home victory later in the season. He did not have any goal involvements earlier in the current campaign as the Red Devils won the first Manchester derby clash with a dramatic 2-1 win over City at the Etihad Stadium. He has also faced United twice at Wembley in the last two FA Cup finals but did not score in either of those games.
