Ruben Amorim maintains that Marcus Rashford is a 'top player, if he wants to be' after he made his breakthrough in an Aston Villa shirt in the FA Cup over the weekend. Rashford scored twice for Villa, his first goals while on loan from Manchester United, at Preston North End in Villa's 3-0 FA Cup quarter final win to send the club to Wembley.

Rashford left Old Trafford in the January transfer window under a cloud after being frozen out by Amorim, who had begun to omit him from his matchday squads and who publicly questioned his attitude in training.

Villa, who sold Jhon Duran to Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League for big money in January, sensed a short-term arrangement to help them finish their season strongly. Rashford, along with Marco Asensio borrowed from PSG, has made a big impact thus far with six goal contributions in ten appearances.

There remains plenty of time to run on his expensive United contract, though - it's been widely reported that Rashford is on a deal which is worth in excess of £300,000 a week with his boyhood club - and although Villa have the option to make the deal permanent in the summer if it continues to go well, Amorim concedes he's not surprised by his form.

“I know Rashford really well and everybody knows the talent that he has, so I already spoke about that," Amorim said. "He’s a top player, if he wants, so I'm not surprised, it's a good thing. We see our players doing well on loan in a different context. That can happen and it's a good sign for the club.”

Amorim was reluctant to speak for too long on the performances and form of Rashford and fellow loanee and the expensive yet underwhelming signing Antony, who headed out to Spain to join Real Betis on a loan basis in the winter transfer window.

“Guys, let's focus on the game. We are really happy for our players that are on loan doing well," he added. “Yeah I'm planning the future but I don't want to talk about the future in this moment. I just want to focus on the game.”
