‘They are not PSG’ – Liverpool boss Arne Slot still reeling over Plymouth Argyle ’embarrassment’

Plymouth Argyle and their historic FA Cup win over Liverpool still has manager Arne Slot furious amid his side’s recent cup struggles.

Plymouth Argyle have, for the most part, had a season few will want to remember. PAFC are sinking towards Championship relegation and a return to League One football after two second-tier seasons.

However, while the league campaign has been nothing to celebrate, the Pilgrims enjoyed a memorable FA Cup run and picked up one of their biggest wins in recent years in the process.

Argyle, while struggling in the Championship, defeated runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool 1-0 at Home Park. A Ryan Hardie penalty secured the win amid a valiant defensive display from Miron Muslic’s side.

And, it seems the Plymouth Argyle loss still plays on the mind of Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

Asked on Tuesday morning about their recent exits from domestic and European cup competitions, Slot said that he doesn’t mind losing to sides such as PSG and Newcastle United, but it is ‘close to a disaster’ to have lost to PAFC in the FA Cup.

As quoted by reporter Lewis Steele, he said:

“I don’t mind losing if it is to Paris Saint-Germain or Newcastle. It is an embarrassment and close to a disaster to lose to Plymouth Argyle.

“I respect them a lot but they are not Paris Saint-Germain.”

Still stinging for Slot

Some may think Liverpool have bigger fish to fry, and they do. However, the loss to Plymouth Argyle was a major shock and having gone out of all other cup competitions, they missed a chance by slipping up against the Championship strugglers.

As the Dutchman expressed though, he has nothing but respect for Argyle. They deserved the win on the day for taking their chance when it come and keeping a top attacking side at bay, and Liverpool just didn’t have an answer in the end.

In a season of days to forget for PAFC, that will always be one for them to look back on fondly.

The Championship focus for Argyle

Argyle’s FA Cup run ended shortly after at the hands of Manchester City and since then, the full focus has been on Championship football.

Unfortunately, it does look as though relegation awaits the Pilgrims.

Plymouth Argyle are bottom of the Championship table and now six points away from safety. A drastic turnaround is needed over the final seven games of the campaign to prevent them from a drop to League One, along with some favourable results elsewhere.
