'Nasty': Eddie Howe confirms when Anthony Gordon will be back in Newcastle United training…

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has provided an update on Anthony Gordon’s fitness.

The 24-year-old did not enjoy the best time away with England. Anthony Gordon did not start the 2-0 win over Albania, but ended the game with an injury.

Gordon limped out of Wembley, resulting in fears that the winger would be set for a spell on the sidelines.

However, hope later emerged. It was reported that Gordon’s injury was not serious, despite him having to miss England’s second World Cup qualifier against Latvia.

Eddie Howe shares Anthony Gordon injury update

Now Eddie Howe has addressed Gordon’s fitness, admitting during his press conference before Brentford that the attacker is expected to return to full training very soon.

“Anthony has a really nasty bruise in and around his thigh/groin area,” he said.

“He’s up and running, feeling quite good.

“We haven’t seen him train with the group yet. We anticipate he will do that in the next few days, hopefully.”

When Anthony Gordon will next play for Newcastle United

Howe’s update on Gordon is very encouraging.

While the international break has been dominated by the euphoria of the Carabao Cup celebrations, Gordon’s fitness has been a worry in the background.

But that is no longer a major concern, with the Magpies’ number 10 due back in training in the coming days.

He will not be available against Brentford on Wednesday night, but that would have been the case even if he was fully fit. Gordon will serve the final game of his three-match ban, before returning to the Newcastle United squad on Monday for the trip to Leicester City.

With Gordon unavailable, Harvey Barnes is predicted to start for Newcastle against Brentford. It is an important match for him, as he sets about proving why he should continue to start despite Gordon’s looming return.

Once the Brentford game has passed, Howe has a big decision to make. He must decide whether or not to immediately recall Gordon to the starting XI after his lapse in discipline, or stick with Harvey Barnes.

It is a difficult call, but the type that Howe wants to have to make after suffering from a lack of depth in attack.
