Can Bournemouth Take All Three Points Against Ipswich?

Written by billythekid

After our Quarter Final FA Cup game against Manchester City, AFCB now focus on their next Premier League game, which is at home at Dean Court on Wednesday night at 7.45 pm. Our opponents are Ipswich Town, who, along with Leicester City and Southampton, were promoted to the top league last season, and it looks like all three could be going down again. The Cherries will be looking to take all 3 points and get back to picking up vital points.

When the Cherries visited Portman Road last December, they came away with all 3 points, leaving the Tractor Boys in the third relegation place, the same place they hold today. Before that game, Ipswich Town had only won one away game and going into this game they have only won one game away since.

That was their next game away against Wolves, finishing 1-2. Since then, on their travels, their manager Kieran McKenna’s team have drawn 2-2 with Fulham and 1-1 against Aston Villa. They lost 1-0 against Arsenal, 4-1 at Liverpool, 3-2 against Manchester United and 1-0 at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace. At home since the game in December, Town have won 1 and lost 6.

The last time Ipswich Town visited Dean Court was in November 2014 in the Championship, the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Yann Kermorgant gave the Cherries an early lead, scoring in the second minute, and that was the only goal in the first half. Five minutes after the start of the second half, Teddy Bishop equalised for the visitors. Matt Ritchie put AFCB back in the lead four minutes later. With fourteen minutes of normal time to go, Daryl Murphy scored and earned an away point for his side.

In all our home league games against Ipswich Town at home, AFCB have W 8, D 7, L 1.

In all competitions, AFCB have W 12, D 13, L 14.

AFCB Player To Watch

Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez were missed against Manchester City. Evanilson has scored 3 goals in his last four games.

Ipswich Town Team News

They have Wesley Burns, Samuel Szmodics, Chiedozie Ogbene, Conor Chaplin, Arijanet Muric, and Axel Tuanzebe all out injured.

Ipswich Town Player To Watch

Liam Delap is their leading scorer with 10 goals, not scored in his last four games in a side struggling for results and without a league win this year. Jack Clarke leads with 4 assists.

The Referee

Robert Jones will be taking his fourth match this season with AFCB involved. The other three games were all against London clubs. The home against Arsenal, away at Fulham and Chelsea.

I’ve looked at the last 4 league games for Ipswich. They had two home games (Spurs and N Forest) and two away games (Man U and C Palace). Ipswich have gained 0 points, which appears to be less that warranted by xG as Man U scored 3 goals from an xG of 0.72. Ipswich have scored 5 goals and conceded 12, with xG estimating 4.48 goals and 7.21 respectively, suggesting the opponents have been more clinical than expected.

Ipswich have had 4 goal-scorers (Jaden with 2 and three players with 1 each). Clarke has 2 assists, and two players have one each.

The average positions of the starting line-ups are below. The defence is quite high for a team near the bottom of the table, which might explain the number of goals conceded. Against Man U, the opponents played a reasonable proportion of the game with 10 men, which would probably push the average position higher.

The following plot compares summary stats of Ipswich and AFCB over the last 4 games.

Goal attempts per game are slightly in AFCB’s favour although we have had more big chances, but we have scored one less goal. Goal attempts per game conceded are in our favour, although big chances conceded are equal, although Ipswich have let in noticeably more goals. AFCB are in front in both the xG and xGc statistics. Ipswich have made more errors than AFCB (5 vs 3).

The possession percentage between the teams is very similar, although Ipswich have a higher pass completion rate. Ipswich have a low proportion of chances from open play, indicating they are focusing on set-plays. Ipswich also concede a lower proportion of chances from set plays.

I like Brooks, and he put in a shift in that first half, but the disadvantage of his starting on Sunday was pretty clear.

Semenyo is often the first option when Kepa is kicking long from the floor, but it was very noticeable how he was the only option on Sunday. Man City realised pretty quickly that they could double up on Semenyo’s side, as we were never going to hit high and long to Brooksey’s side.

With Dango or Tav on the other wing, Kepa can mix it up a bit, but it was just too predictable on Sunday. – To join the conversation, please click here.
