'Surprised': Arne Slot admits he is still not happy about one thing that happened when Liverpool last faced Everton

Liverpool are back in action on Wednesday night following the most recent international break.

The Reds host Everton at Anfield as Arne Slot’s squad look to get their Premier League back up and running after the break with the Merseyside club having a comfortable 12-point lead over Arsenal in the standings.

Having been knocked out of the Champions League by PSG and losing the Carabao Cup final to Newcastle during their last two matches, Liverpool fans may start to have concerns if points are dropped against Everton.

The Toffees put up a big fight the last time the two teams met, which led to some unsavoury scenes after the full-time whistle as Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure became involved in a scuffle, which led to both receiving red cards.

Speaking about this contest again on Tuesday, Slot has admitted that he is still not happy about what happened at Goodison Park.

Liverpool were 2-1 up heading into extra-time when the Reds last faced Everton in February, before a very late James Tarkowski goal would equalise for the home side as the contest had eight minutes of extra-time added at the end.

Slot was sent off in the aftermath of the goal as the Dutch coach made the officials on the day know that he was not happy with what had played out during the 90 minutes.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, the Liverpool boss stated that he is still not over what happened on that day at Goodison Park, as the Dutch coach admitted he will be ‘surprised’ if he ever sees so many decisions go against his team again.

“I hope I will act differently next time, but I can’t promise that,” Slot said. “What I’m also sure about is that I will be so surprised if I ever experience eight minutes of so many controversial decisions in our disadvantage again. So, yes, even if it happens, I hope I act differently, but I can’t promise.”

Nobody will want to see scenes like that again on Wednesday as red cards would have a big impact on both teams’ seasons.

Everton have been a much stronger outfit since David Moyes took over back in January and Slot has also been speaking about the Scottish coach’s impact.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot wary of Everton threat

Everton struggled during the first half of the 2024/25 campaign as the Toffees found themselves fighting relegation once again under Sean Dyche, however, things have changed since the return of Moyes back in January.

The Blues are unbeaten in their last nine Premier League games and currently sit 15th, 17 points clear of the relegation zone.

Although Everton do not have much to play for throughout the rest of the season, Slot admitted to the press that he is aware of the threat the Toffees possess after experiencing the fight against them two months ago.

“David Moyes hasn’t lost in the last nine league games, so it would be a surprise if they did something different,” the Liverpool boss said. “But we are top of the league, so it would be strange if we were going to change something as well.”

Liverpool will have their own fans behind them this time around and that could be the difference in the Reds getting three points or not.
