Not Gyokeres: Jason Wilcox'is a fan'of 22yo striker, Man United could sign him at a discount this summer

Manchester United are expected to bolster their frontline after struggling in the final third this season.

Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike are heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford but their hefty price tags could force United to explore alternative options.

According to The Athletic, technical director Jason Wilcox “is a fan” of Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.

The 22-year-old holds an “appeal” for United because of his age.

The Red Devils could also capitalise on Ipswich’s struggles.

The Tractor Boys find themselves nine points adrift of safety in the Premier League, making a cut-price deal more realistic if they suffer relegation.

Delap has been a bright spark for Ipswich this season, netting 10 goals and providing two assists in 28 league appearances.

He joined Ipswich from Manchester City in a £20 million deal last summer.

However, City hold a trump card in the deal, with a £40m buyback clause that could complicate United’s pursuit.

It is expected that United will have to bid a similar amount to sign the centre-forward.

The young striker brings a powerful and physical presence up front.

He excels at holding up the ball, a quality Rasmus Hojlund lacks.

With financial restrictions looming at Old Trafford, the club are unlikely to splurge on a single marquee signing.

Apart from a striker, United also need to sign a wing-back and an attacking midfielder.

They will hope to offload Marcus Rashford and Antony for respectable fees, using the funds to reshape a squad that desperately needs fresh impetus.
