MEMPHIS — The Celtics entered the franchise record books yet again on Monday night, completing a 6-0 road trip with a 117-103 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies at FedEx Forum. Boston going undefeated on their season-long road trip set a new franchise mark for longest road trip without a loss, topping a 5-0 road trip completed by the Celtics back in February 1973.
The undefeated trip came in the midst of a dominant stretch for Boston that carried over to the road. Boston has now won nine straight games overall and 14 of their last 15 games to put them within striking distance of another 60-win season at 56-19 with seven games remaining.
Boston won all six games on their trip by double digits with an average margin of victory of 16.8 points, include wins over potential playoff teams in Sacramento, Phoenix and Memphis.
“It’s special anytime you make history in this league,” Jayson Tatum said after scoring 25 points in the victory. “You have to enjoy that. Six games, 12 or 13 days away from home.”
Boston was able to make history despite being down several regulars over the course of the trip. Jaylen Brown missed three games including Monday’s win while Tatum sat out Saturday’s win against the Spurs. All five regular starters except for Derrick White had at least a game off during the stretch but the team still took care of business every night with a revolving supporting cast. Tatum indicated that he believes the Celtics have leaned on their experience to turn this run into such a strength.
“Just a mindset of what we did last year,” Tatum explained. “We won a championship and the idea that regardless of your record or your seed, you have to win some games on the road in the playoffs if you want to be a champion. Kind of establish that mindset throughout the regular season.”
Al Horford came off a night off in San Antonio to score a season-high 26 points in the victory, putting them now within striking distance of matching the NBA’s best-ever road record of 34-7 on the year with two road games remaining.
“I just think we’ve been very focused,” Horford said. “I feel like even last year, we were good and especially in the playoffs we did a really good job on the road, controlling the tempo, being able to play a certain way. It’s pretty special the way that we’re playing and some of the things we’re doing here.”
The Celtics will attempt to match that NBA road record mark next week when they face off against the Knicks and Magic on a tough back-to-back in their final two road games of the regular season.
