Mason Mount hasn’t been able to catch a break since Manchester United brought him for £55 million in the summer of 2023.

The number 7 curse has continued to haunt him since his arrival to Old Trafford, missing 50 out of 82 games mainly due to injuries.

There may be hope that he can still play an important role at United as he has had another couple of weeks in training over the international break, following his return to the bench away at Leicester.

Mount hasn’t been able to put a consistent run of games together since Ruben Amorim arrived at the club in November. He lasted only 14 minutes when starting the Manchester derby and has only featured six times under Amorim, but this hasn’t stopped United’s head coach from expressing his admiration for the English midfielder.

Amorim “really loves” Mount and is often keen to talk about his work ethic, something which United fans would love to see on a regular basis, but haven’t had the chance to see it very often.

Amorim sees Mount in training every day and believes in him, often talking the England international up in contrast to what Amorim has had to say about other players this season such as Marcus Rashford.

However, if you were to judge a player solely on stats and attacking output, it isn’t pretty reading when it comes to Mount’s goals and assists. Just one of each and both were last season. The goal against Brentford away last term and a single assist in the EFL Cup against Crystal Palace at the beginning of that campaign.

There have been spells and glimpses of talent within Mount’s performances this season, most notably his flick to Manuel Ugarte which he used to tee up Rasmus Hojlund for a goal against Bodo Glimt in the Europa League. There is hope Mount can still be a very important player for United, but availability and playing time is crucial. That is why Bruno Fernandes has been, and continues to be so integral to this United team.

There’s clearly something about Mount which catches the eye of the manager he’s played under. A favourite of both Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel during his time at Chelsea and in his early days on loan with Derby County. Amorim’s predecessor Erik Ten Hag was also a big fan. Upon his arrival he praised his dynamism and highlighted on his ‘completeness’ and ‘multi-functionality’ as a player.

Most importantly though, Amorim likes him and it has just been really unfortunate that Mount’s body has let him down.
