86-app star & £14m talent: Three players who may have already played their final games for…

Leicester City fans will be excited for the 2024/25 campaign to end as it’s been a disaster from minute one.

It’s only the start of April but the Foxes find themselves rooted in the bottom three and nine points from safety in the Premier League.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has led Leicester City on a terrible run of form, losing 13 of their last 14 matches in the league while setting an unwanted record in the process.

So, ahead of a likely season in the Championship, Van Nistelrooy will be waving goodbye to some of his first-team players.

Here are three who may have already played their final minutes for the club.

Odsonne Edouard

Odsonne Edouard was signed on loan from Crystal Palace on transfer deadline day as direct competition for Jamie Vardy.

Some saw the capture as a solid addition while others felt it was a panic buy, and unfortunately, the latter has transpired.

Leicester tried to cancel Edouard’s loan in January after the Frenchman played just 142 minutes in the top flight this term.

Alarmingly, the star who Palace signed for £14 million has featured in just one matchday squad since Van Nistelrooy took over in December while failing to play a single minute.

It looks as though Edouard has already played his final game for the club after costing the Foxes some ridiculous money.

Danny Ward

Daniel Iversen can also be named on this list but Danny Ward has almost certainly played his last game for Leicester.

The Welsh international has only made two appearances this term, including in the 4-0 defeat to Newcastle and the 3-0 loss against Wolves in December.

Since then, the 31-year-old hasn’t made a single squad, with Van Nistelrooy preferring Mads Hermansen as his first choice and Jakub Stolarczyk as the backup option.

Ward sees his contract expire in June 2025, and for that reason, he will be released on a free transfer in the summer after seven years at the King Power Stadium.

Jannik Vestergaard

A stalwart in their Championship title-winning campaign, Jannik Vestergaard’s fall from grace at Leicester has been rapid.

Vestergaard has been woeful throughout this campaign, often alongside Wout Faes, with his lack of pace and mobility costing City.

Not for the first time, too, the Danish international has fallen out with the manager. In the defeat to West Ham in February, Vestergaard refused to shake Van Nistelrooy’s hand.

The 32-year-old has since been left out of the matchday squad in defeats against Chelsea and Manchester United.

Although he could feature between now and the end of the campaign, especially if there’s a defensive injury, it’s likely he could have played his final game for the Foxes after 86 appearances.
