Latest San Francisco 49ers news on Brock Purdy contract talks, timeline for extension

The San Francisco 49ers roster has undergone a significant overhaul this offseason with the intent of creating enough cap space for a Brock Purdy contract extension. With contract talks underway, progress is being made on a deal that will make Purdy one of the highest-paid NFL players ever.

San Francisco has made its intentions clear. Both head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch want to commit to Purdy as the long-term franchise quarterback. While he’s partially been elevated by the help of a great system and one of the best NFL rosters in the last two years, he fits what the team wants.

The 49ers also see the value in getting a deal done quickly. Purdy would be eligible for NFL free agency in 2026, but the team has the franchise tag it can apply on him in consecutive years. However, using the franchise tag pushes the leverage in negotiation further in the player’s favor and the longer a team waits, the higher the contract price can become.

Speaking to reporters this week, Lynch expressed confidence that a contract extension is worked out and it could even be done in the near future. In fact, there’s a chance everything gets signed right before the start of the offseason programs in just a few weeks.

“I think we’re going to get the deal done. That’s what I believe. We’ll just leave it at that…I don’t think it’s too optimistic. I understand why Brock wants that. We’d like that very much so. We’ve just got to find that right place for both sides. I would love nothing more for that to be the case.”

San Francisco has benefitted immensely from having the lowest-paid starting quarterback in the NFL over the last two full seasons. A former seventh-round pick, Purdy has already earned a Pro Bowl selection and played in the Super Bowl.

He’ll soon have a multi-year extension that reflects what he’s brought to the team, earning a salary that is much more in line with his peers across the league. While that will mean paying the starting quarterback tens of millions of dollars more each year than before, that’s worth it to San Francisco to keep Purdy.
