Report reveals truth about Manchester City links with 22-year-old Barcelona mainstay

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona do not have any idea about Manchester City’s interest in 22-year-old Spanish international Pedri.

According to a report by MARCA, as relayed by Sport Witness, Pedri might be the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Premier League champions are combing the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window and can do with the Barcelona mainstay. However, the Catalan giants “haven’t been notified” of the Citizens’ eagerness to sign the Spanish international.

The rise and rise of Pedri

Pedri has come leaps and bounds since joining Barcelona from UD Las Palmas in September 2019. The Spaniard spent an additional season on loan with Las Palmas before establishing a foothold in the first-team squad at FC Barcelona. While he has struggled with fitness issues in the last few campaigns, his performance levels remain elite.

The 22-year-old is arguably Barcelona’s best player, and his improved fitness levels are a boon for the Blaugrana. The highly-rated midfielder has turned out nearly 200 times thus far for the Catalan outfit while chipping in with 25 goals and 20 assists.

Meanwhile, the Spanish midfielder’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Manchester City might be among the prospective suitors vying for the signature of the Barcelona midfielder heading into the summer transfer window.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Manchester City can do with a midfielder like Pedri in the summer transfer window. While Nico Gonzalez arrived at the Etihad this past winter from FC Porto, several midfielders face an uncertain future at the Premier League club. Manchester City might part ways with Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, and Ilkay Gindogan.

In addition, Kalvin Phillips has no future at the Etihad, while Manchester City might not keep Matheus Nunes and Pedri beyond this season. So, the Barcelona mainstay is a viable target for Manchester City, although MARCA has refuted claims that a bid worth €100 million might be on the hard.

The report has claimed that Barcelona “haven’t been notified” about Manchester City’s interest. In addition, €100 million might not be enough to secure Pedri’s future, and the 22-year-old Spanish midfielder will unlikely leave Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
