Man United will need to sell some players in order to generate funds for their transfer business.

Manchester United are preparing for a squad overhaul in the summer transfer window as they aim to rebuild under Ruben Amorim. They currently sit 13th in the Premier League, 11 points off rivals Manchester City.

Due to Premier League profit and sustainability Rules, selling academy graduates is even more valuable as they generate ‘pure profit’, so United could sell several homegrown players.

Marcus Rashford is one academy player who looks set to leave. He scored his first goal for Aston Villa in their 3-0 FA Cup win against Preston North End. He has a £40m buy option in his loan deal at Villa. However, Rashford isn’t the only United academy graduate that could be sold in summer.

Man United receive offer for Garnacho

Other than Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho is another academy graduate that the club could sell in the summer to generate ‘pure profit’, and give them plenty of leeway in terms of PSR in the next transfer window.

Garnacho was previously linked to Chelsea in the January transfer window, but they aren’t the ones to make an approach for the Argentine. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Napoli have presented a £67m offer for the 20-year-old.

The report says that the Italian club are looking to add more quality in attack due to the fact that they are expecting to lose star striker Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray.

Garnacho could command a hefty transfer fee, which would give United plenty of money to spend on more players in the transfer window. The 20-year-old has struggled to find consistency at United this season, making 28 Premier League appearances, with four goals and one assist.

Napoli were previously linked to signing him in the January transfer window, but they didn’t make a move, and United are more likely to sell him in the summer considering their need for funds boost.

Garnacho sale could allow move for Serie A striker

If they do sell the 20-year-old, it is likely that United will want to sign multiple attackers with the £67m to hand them some more firepower up front.

They have recently been linked to signing Udinese striker Lorenzo Lucca, who could command a fee of around £29m. He is a tall striker, towering at 6ft 7in, and has 10 goals in 29 Serie A games for Udinese this season.

The 24-year-old costing under £30m would make him a more realistic target than the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen who are expected to command a fee closer to £70m this summer. Napoli and West Ham are also both reportedly keen to sign the Italian target man.

He joined Udinese last summer for a fee of £6.7m from Serie B side Pisa where he’d spent the previous three years, scoring just six goals in 35 games amid a number of loan moves to the likes of Palermo and Ajax. With PSR rules, United can account for all of Garnacho’s potential £67m fee while using amortisation on potential incomings to stay within PSR limits.

For example, if they were to sign Lucca on a five-year deal for £29m they could account for that fee over each season of his deal, meaning they would only need to account for £5.8m this summer. The net result would mean that over £60m of Garnacho’s sale is still unaccounted for this season - although they would need to continue to account for an extra £5.8m unless Lucca was sold.
