Digitization in diagnostic imaging benefits important Cuban hospital

PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba, Apr 1 (ACN) The Abel Santamaria Cuadrado provincial hospital, the largest in the westernmost province of Pinar del Rio, has been benefiting for the past three years from the project to promote hospital digitalization in diagnostic imaging, which has an impact on the quality of medical care.

Promoted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Cuban Ministry of Public Health, to date it has allowed the performance of more than 24,000 tomographic imaging studies and 34,400 digital X-rays in the Pinar del Rio institution.

The initiative included five pilot hospitals: Abel Santamaria Cuadrado, Miguel Enriquez, Manuel Fajardo, Calixto Garcia and Juan Manuel Marquez, in Havana.

It favored the donation of computers; wifi connection equipment; supplies for network connectivity infrastructure, servers and storage disks; grounding system for hospital nodes; fiber optic cable; visualization terminals in order to strengthen computer networks and communications means for the effective use of images.

Nakamura Kazuhito, Japanese ambassador to Cuba, emphasized the willingness of his people and government to help the Caribbean island, as this is part of the technical cooperation projects in health promoted by the Asian nation since 2017.

Ashida Tatsuya, representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, highlighted that the computer equipment has contributed to the improvement in data transmission networks and achieved one hundred percent wireless coverage in the Pinar del Río hospital, with an impact on the quality of medical service.

He also noted that this has benefited more than 178,600 patients in Pinar del Rio.

The project to promote hospital digitalization in diagnostic imaging benefited, on a smaller scale, five other hospitals in Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Camagüey, Holguin and Santiago de Cuba.
