Newcastle preparing to trim squad at season’s end: Report

[The Athletic’s Chris Waugh](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6243717/2025/04/01/newcastle-qa-isak-mitchell-contracts-stadium/) has outlined where things stand with [Newcastle United](https://cominghomenewcastle.sbnation.com)’s out-of-contract players, confirming that Fabian Schar is expected to remain while others, including Callum Wilson and Jamaal Lascelles, face uncertain futures.

“There are six players whose contracts expire this summer, if Jamal Lewis is included, with the left-back certain to be released,” Waugh wrote.

Schar, 33, is the likeliest to stay.

“The 33-year-old’s new deal has not been announced yet, but progress has been made and the expectation is that the Switzerland international will be on Tyneside next season,” Waugh wrote. While the club is targeting a right-sided center-back this summer, Schar is still “likely to be a member of Howe’s squad.”

Club captain Jamaal Lascelles, who hasn’t played a minute this season due to injury, could depart.

“There is a decent chance the 31-year-old will depart,” Waugh noted, although he added that Newcastle may still value his off-field influence. “If at least one centre-half is signed, then Lascelles is unlikely to play much.”

Callum Wilson’s situation remains delicate. Newcastle can unilaterally extend his contract by 12 months, but Waugh wrote that “the business case to do so appears weak.”

The striker is one of the club’s highest earners and has only started two matches this season due to injuries. As of now, “it is looking more likely now that he will leave rather than stay.”

The goalkeeping situation also remains fluid. John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie’s fates could depend on Martin Dubravka’s future.

“If Martin Dubravka leaves, then the likelihood of both staying increases,” Waugh reported, with Burnley’s James Trafford still viewed as a long-term target and reportedly already pre-signed and ready to join the club through the upcoming summer transfer window.
