A Manchester United player out on loan has been told he can still make a big impact at Premier League
Premier League winner Emmanuel Petit believes Jadon Sancho can still have a successful career in the English top flight as he compared the Manchester United man to Manchester City legend Kevin De Bruyne.
Sancho left Old Trafford in August after agreeing a season-long loan with Chelsea and is set to join the Stamford Bridge outfit on permanent deal at the end of the season. The Blues have agreed an obligation to buy between £20m and £25m. They do have the opportunity to forego the permanent move but it means they will be subject to what has been described as a significant financial penalty for doing so.
The former Man City academy player joined United from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in the summer of 2021 after an impressive spell with the German club. However, he struggled at Old Trafford and then had a public fallout with former manager Erik ten Hag after his performances in training were criticised by the Dutchman after the Red Devils had lost 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium. He returned to Dortmund on loan and helped them reach the Champions League final before making the move to West London.
Emmanuel Petit believes Jadon Sancho has the talent to succeed in Premier League
Asked if Sancho was out of his depth in the Premier League, Petit - who won the 1998 title with Arsenal - told pokerfirma.com: “I won't say that he’s not good enough for the Premier League because that reminds me of the likes of Kevin De Bruyne. He was at Chelsea and then things didn't go well for him, he returned to Germany and then came back. We all know what happened with him at Man City.
“I think there are questions about his weight, sometimes, and his ability to fight mentally. And this is something he has to learn, especially when you play for top clubs. At the moment, I won't say he doesn’t have the talent to play for the top clubs in the Premier League. But who knows in the future, things can change very quickly.
“But at the moment, he hasn’t shown the quality to stay at Chelsea, and he hasn’t shown the quality to even be at Manchester United, and that’s really something because they’re having a rotten season.”
How has Jadon Sancho performed since joining Chelsea?
Sancho has made 28 appearances since his move to Stamford Bridge, scoring two goals while providing seven assists. Both of his goals have come in the Premier League while five of his assists have been in the league, with the other two coming in the Europa Conference League.
His form has stuttered in recent months but the forward was in for some praise from Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca back in mid January. He said: “For me he’s doing very well. I am quite surprised with Jadon, because I knew Jadon already [from seeing him at his previous clubs] and I know what I expected from him, but in terms of being consistent, he’s doing very well.
“Apart from a short part of the season when he had some problems, when he was out ill, then for the rest he has been very good. I expected him to do well, but for all the players doing well for a long period is not easy, and he has been doing well for a long period already. He’s doing well, now he just needs to continue going in that way.”
Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim has also recently addressed Sancho’s situation amid claims Chelsea could look to send him back to Old Trafford.
