Mohamed Salah continues to find himself in the headlines on and off the pitch as speculation around his Liverpool future goes on. Salah's present deal expires at the end of the season, and he ramped up the pressure on the Anfield hierarchy with some hard-hitting comments towards the end of last year.

Speaking to a handful of journalists, including the ECHO, after his side's 3-2 win over Southampton, Salah said he was 'more out than in' at Liverpool - while the forward also revealed he was 'disappointed' not to have received a formal approach from the club over a new deal.

The ECHO first reported back in September that Salah would like to sign a new contract with Liverpool; however, no new deal has yet been signed. On the pitch, though, the forward has so far scored 32 goals in 43 games to help put his side on the brink of becoming Premier League champions.

However, some Liverpool supporters believe that Salah still does not get the credit he deserves from those in the media. But not for the first time, former Everton and Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has debunked that theory.

Taking part in the Daily Mail's 'Winner Stays On' game, Rooney selected Salah over Erling Haaland, Sergio Aguero, Karim Benzema and Raul, before opting to go with Thierry Henry over the Egypt international.

This isn't the first time Rooney has praised Salah this term. Speaking ahead of Liverpool's Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield, Rooney told Amazon Prime that no other footballer is on the forward's level at the moment.

He said: "Mo Salah, in my opinion, is the best in the world right now. He doesn't always come back and you can get away with that [at his level]."

Rooney also said, last year, that he feels Salah does not get the credit he deserves. Speaking to Premier League Productions, he claimed: "He carries the ball up the pitch, he makes great runs in behind, he scores goals and he creates goals.

"That's what he's there to do. He's the main threat. They've had No.9s... Roberto Firmino, Darwin Nunez. But he's the one that keeps scoring the goals.

"I don't think he gets the credit he deserves. Look at Phil Foden in a similar role. He's got another eight, nine or 10 years to get to the numbers Mohamed Salah is hitting. I'd like to see him get more credit."
