Packers’ HC Matt LaFleur: “Internal Discussions” Were Had Over Stars’ Public Remarks

The Green Bay Packers were well represented by head coach Matt LaFleur and company at this year’s annual owners meeting in Palm Beach Florida. Of course, that means LaFleur had plenty of opportunities to talk to local reporters who cover the Packers.

One of those conversations involved a player’s public comments this off-season.

According to Ryan Wood of USA Today:

Matt LaFleur says Josh Jacobs wasn’t trying to disparagePackers receivers when he expressed team needing to find a No. 1 target, but they did talk about the comments internally.

LaFleur’s hope is someone in receiving room emerges into that role.

Earlier this off-season, this is what Josh Jacobs had to say regarding the wide receiver position in Green Bay:

Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs caused a stir online following comments he made on the Bill Simmons podcast, “No BS.” During his interview, he said that “I think we need a guy that’s proven to be a #1 WR already.”

However, before the video and audio of his interview was posted online, multiple NFL reporters misquoted him as saying “I think we need a real wide receiver.”

Obviously, those are two very different statements with two very different messages.

Regardless of what was said, unfortunately what matters now is how it is perceived. Dontayvion Wicks‘ reaction on social media seemed to indicate he was not too fond of the comments.

Star quarterback Jordan Love, however, has a different, albeit neutral, view of it.

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks (13) scores a touchdown in the fourth quarter against Minnesota Vikings safety Camryn Bynum (24) during their football game Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

It will be interesting to see how Green Bay further addresses the wide receiver position this off-season. They started by signing wide receiver Mecole Hardman to a one-year deal earlier this off-season.
