Alan Shearer has revealed that Newcastle players were banned from drinking alcohol during their open-top bus parade on Saturday.

Eddie Howe's side ended their lengthy 70-year wait for a domestic trophy on March 16 after beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, courtesy of goals from local hero Dan Burn and Alexander Isak. Federico Chiesa set up a grandstand finish but the Magpies held out to make history.

To commemorate their first trophy since 1969, the club organised a bus parade through Newcastle city centre.

An estimated 150,000 Newcastle fans were in attendance to celebrate the feat - but it was a sober one for the players.

Magpies legend Shearer revealed on The Rest Is Football podcast: 'They've got Brentford on Wednesday and they trained yesterday.

'They're training today, they're training Monday, they're training Tuesday, and they're training Wednesday morning as well.

'Because Eddie had taken them to Dubai and he said, "No, that's your party."

'And they weren't allowed to drink yesterday or last evening.

'None of them went to the afterparty. He got them back straight in and focused.'

The open top bus began at 4:30 and wound its way to the Town Moor, where a ticketed celebration for a Q&A with Newcastle club legends including Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer.

The current squad took to the the stage to salute their fans at 6.30pm, with Newcastle superfans Ant and Dec leading a chant of 'Toon! Toon!'

The players and staff on stage took turns lifting the cup, with Ant and Dec shouting encouragement and the mass of fans cheering them on.

After interviews with Eddie Howe and assistant manager Jason Tindall, club captain Bruno Guimaraes conducted the crowd in a singalong of Hey Jude, before launching into a round of terrace chants.

Newcastle are currently in sixth place in the table and will be eager to qualify for the Champions League.

Their victory at Wembley has earned them a place in the Conference League play-off, which the Magpies would be expected to win, though they will be keen to try and cash in on a more reputable competition if the chance should arise.

The Magpies return to action against Brentford at St James' Park on Wednesday night.
