Notes: NFL can now flex Thursday night games with shorter notice

NFL owners have tweaked flex scheduling rules to allow for less advanced notice when deciding whether to flex a Thursday night game, per NFL Media.

This will be the third year the NFL is able to flex Thursday night games. Under the first two seasons from 2023-24, a Thursday night game could only be flexed if it was scheduled for Weeks 13 through 17. If that game did get moved, the NFL had to give 28 days notice.

On Monday, team owners at the NFL’s annual league meeting in Florida voted to allow the NFL to flex a Thursday night game with just 21 days notice. The league now has an extra week to decide whether to flex a game, which could lead to more games being flexed.

The Lions were among the teams to vote against the original Thursday night flex proposal in 2023. It was a controversial topic—a proposal needs 24 owners to support it to pass and it got exactly 24 votes. Per CBS Sports, owners who voted against it were concerned about it not being fair to fans who would be forced to change their travel arrangements if a game were moved.

Despite all the controversy, only one game has been flexed since 2023—a matchup between the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers was moved to a Thursday night in Week 16, while the originally scheduled Cincinnati Bengals-Cleveland Browns game was moved to the following Sunday afternoon.
