Report: Liverpool and Real Madrid both want to sign £41.8m "warrior" centre-back

Liverpool’s long-standing interest in Piero Hincapié has resurfaced as they look to reinforce their defensive options ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Bayer Leverkusen centre-back has been linked with a move to Anfield on multiple occasions, with his agent Manuel Sierra previously confirming that talks had taken place in 2023.

At the time, Liverpool’s focus was on rebuilding their midfield, leading them to sign Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo instead.

However, with defensive reinforcements now a priority, Sky Germany reports that the Reds have renewed their interest in the Ecuadorian international.

Liverpool and Real Madrid in the race for Hincapié

Both Liverpool and Real Madrid are reportedly considering a move for Hincapié, with Leverkusen already preparing for his departure by pursuing FC Lugano’s Albian Hajdari as a potential replacement.

The Bundesliga champions are bracing for the exits of both Hincapié and Jonathan Tah this summer, making the defender’s availability more likely.

A perfect fit for Arne Slot’s system?

Hincapié’s versatility could make him an ideal addition to Arne Slot’s Liverpool squad. Described by Xabi Alonso as a “warrior, the 23-year-old is one of most exciting defenders in Europe at present.

While he primarily operates as a left-sided centre-back in Xabi Alonso’s 3-4-3 system, he has also been deployed at left-back in a four-man defence – a trait that would be highly beneficial given Liverpool’s defensive transition.

Liverpool are currently in the market for a new left-back, with Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez and Ajax’s Jorrel Hato among their reported targets. Signing a player like Hincapié, who can cover both centre-back and left-back, would add valuable depth and flexibility.

A defensive shake-up at Anfield

Liverpool’s interest in defensive reinforcements comes amid uncertainty surrounding their current backline:

Newcastle have reportedly shown interest in both Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez, having previously bid for Gomez last summer.

Virgil van Dijk has yet to agree a new contract, while Ibrahima Konaté will enter the final 12 months of his deal in July.

Leverkusen’s strong negotiating position

Hincapié is valued at around €50 million (£41.8m) – a price quoted a year and a half ago. However, since then, the 22-year-old has signed a contract extension with Leverkusen until 2029, strengthening the German club’s bargaining position.

Unlike some of his teammates, there is no reported release clause in his new deal, meaning Leverkusen could demand a higher fee for their highly-rated defender.

As Liverpool prepare for a crucial summer window, securing a young, aggressive, ball-playing defender like Hincapié could be key in reshaping their backline for the future.
