New York Giants Could be About to Form Chaotic Quarterback Room

The New York Giants have already spent significant resources on their quarterback room in 2025, and might not be done adding just yet.

After committing $8 million over the next two seasons to Jameis Winston and as much as $21 million to Russell Wilson–if the former Super Bowl winner hits various incentives this season, the Giants may wind up adding one of the top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft class, as well.

Could the New York Giants Still Take Shedeur Sanders?

Despite the sizable financial commitment the Giants made, neither Winston or Wilson can reasonably be viewed as New York’s quarterback of the future.

However, the Giants could wind up targeting University of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders with the No. 3 overall pick in this spring’s draft. That’s the exact scenario that plays out in Pro Football Focus’ latest mock draft projection.

“Some believe signing Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston would preclude the Giants from taking Sanders with this pick,” Dalton Wasserman writes for PFF. “However, those two are guaranteed only a combined $14 million in 2024. New York could still select Sanders with the idea of keeping all three for this season and slowly ushering him into the league. If Sanders proves himself immediately worthy of being the Giants’ QB2 or starter, Winston likely becomes a trade target for a team dealing with injury or searching for an experienced backup.”

Sanders would give the Giants a rookie quarterback with upside to build around into the future, while potentially playing Wilson or Winston in 2025. However, as one NFL executive points out, it could prove difficult to manage that quarterback room.

“I can’t imagine they’ll handle it well,” a rival NFC personnel executive told me, of how he thinks Daboll and the coaching staff will be able to manage all of those big personalities thrown together. “It’s … a lot.”

Sanders is one of the more fascinating quarterback prospects in this year’s draft, and is coming off a stellar 2024 campaign in which he passed for a career-high 4,134 yards with 37 touchdowns to 10 interceptions.

Given the Giants’ long-term uncertainty at quarterback, Sanders could be a top target to watch for the Giants. How head coach Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen manage to manage a quarterback room with so many big personalities, though, would remain anyone’s guess.
