Google announced that its experimental Gemini 2.5 Pro AI model is now free for all users just a week after unveiling it. This new version, which the company says is its "most intelligent AI model" yet, was initially only available to Gemini Advanced subscribers but has now been made accessible through the Gemini app and Google AI Studio. Non-paying users will have tighter rate limits.
Gemini 2.5 Pro is called a "thinking model" because it can analyze information, draw logical conclusions, and add context and nuance to its responses. The company says this helps the model give more accurate results in tasks that require reasoning.
It also supports text, audio, image, and video inputs, making it useful for a lot of things. It can handle up to 1 million tokens in a single session.
The model has shown strong performance across various benchmarks. It achieved high scores in reasoning tests like Humanity's Last Exam and excelled in math and science evaluations such as GPQA Diamond and AIME 2025. In coding tasks, it showed strong capabilities in generating and debugging code.
As expected, free-version users will have some limitations, such as fewer requests per minute and per day compared with paying users. Subscribers also have a larger context window. And some tools, such as Canvas for interactive coding and document creation, remain exclusive to paid users, as reported by Engadget.
