There’s been a lot of change at Crystal Palace since the club last made it to an FA Cup semi final in 2022.
Crystal Palace go into this week’s Premier League meeting with struggling Southampton buoyed by the taste of FA Cup triumph thanks to a 3-0 away win over in-form Fulham on Saturday.
The Eagles return to Wembley Stadium for the semi-final against Aston Villa later this month, three years on from having been beaten by Chelsea at that stage of the competition in 2022.
Patrick Vieira was still in charge of the team at that point but second half goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mason Mount prevented the south London side from reaching the final. LondonWorld looks at where the starting XI from that fixture are today.
Crystal Palace XI to face Chelsea in the FA Cup semi final 2022
GK - Jack Butland
Ended a three year stay at Selhurst Park come the conclusion of the 2022/23 season. Butland was largely second choice for the Eagles over the 2021/22 campaign but played every minute of the FA Cup.
The 32-year-old is now at Rangers, having joined the Glasgow giants in 2023. He's number one at the Scottish side and has racked up 41 appearances in all competitions already this season.
LWB - Tyrick Mitchell
Still at Crystal Palace. The 25-year-old is a mainstay under Glasner and you'd expect the full-back to be in the starting XI to take on Aston Villa at Wembley Stadium later this month.
CB - Marc Guehi
Another defender who is still playing their football at Crystal Palace three years on. There are questions over how much longer Guehi will be an Eagles player with transfer rumours swirling.
CB - Joachim Andersen
That FA Cup semi-final year was Andersen's first at Crystal Palace, having joined from Lyon for £16 million. The defender left south London to move to Fulham for £30 million last summer.
Andersen has previously been on loan at Craven Cottage from Lyon over the 2020/21 campaign. He played the full 90 minute for Fulham in the quarter final defeat to his former club.
Former Crystal Palace man fails Leeds United medical
CB - Cheikhou Kouyaté
A regular that season, Kouyaté's versatility was always an asset for Crystal Palace. The former West Ham man made the move to Nottingham Forest in 2022 in their mad summer of recruitment.
Now 35 years old, the Senegal international was released at the end of the 2023/24 season. There was talk of a free transfer to Leeds United last October but Football Insider reported that the player failed a medical.
RWB - Joel Ward
Has now been at Crystal Palace for 13 years and is 35 years old. Ward has racked up a staggering 362 appearances for the club. The defender has been a fringe figure this season with just 11 minutes of Carabao Cup football afforded to him. His contract is set to expire this summer.
CM - Jeffrey Schlupp
Mr Versatile, Jeffrey Schlupp is still on the books at Crystal Palace and has been since arriving from Leicester City in 2017.
Schlupp joined Celtic on loan in January, having also been linked with several Championship clubs. Speaking about a potential permanent move recently, the midfielder said: “I mean at the minute, I’m absolutely loving it. I’m loving it. Regarding next season, obviously, nothing’s been spoken about yet. I’m just concentrating on this season, getting some more minutes and then winning some more games and having some fun.
“Everything’s a possibility. Again, just keep focusing on the next few games and then hopefully, we can finish the season off really strong, keep winning games and then we can go from there.”
CM - James McArthur
Was released by Crystal Palace in May 2023 having spent nine years with the side. The former Wigan Athletic man confirmed his retirement from football in August 2023.
When hanging up his boots, the midfielder said: "After 18 years of playing professional football, the game I love, today I am announcing my retirement. After playing for three amazing clubs in Hamilton, Wigan and Crystal Palace, and representing my country, I can only look back on the past 18 years with immense pride.
"I cannot thank the players, managers, coaches, owners, staff members and fans enough for always supporting me and being a huge part of my journey. A day that I never wanted to happen, but it's a decision that I know is right for me and my family. I'm not entirely sure what the future holds but I am looking forward to the next chapter in my career."
CM - Eberechi Eze
That campaign was the start of a breakthrough for Eberechi Eze. The midfielder missed the early matches with an Achilles problem, was then a regular on the bench and finished the campaign as part of the starting XI.
The 26-year-old is now the star man at Selhurst Park and scored a beauty of a strike to put Crystal Palace in the lead against Fulham in the quarter final. The England international could be pivotal at Wembley Stadium.
Wilfried Zaha defends MLS move
ST - Wilfried Zaha
The Crystal Palace legend ended his fourth stint at the club in 2023 and moved to Turkish outfit Galatasaray. The forward hasn’t quite settled since then with a loan move to Lyon in France followed by a loan to Charlotte FC this year.
Zaha recently defended himself against criticisms over his ambitions for moving to the MLS. He said: "It made sense to me. My thing is, with how my career has gone and places I've gone, when I went to Turkey everyone said, 'Oh my god, why would you go there?'
"I don't care what other people think. I go where I feel I want to go and make my own history. That's my mentality. I never follow anyone. Once I spoke to Dean the manager and people, I was like, that's my destination."
ST - Jean-Phillipe Mateta
Mateta was still on an 18-month loan from Mainz 05 for the FA Cup semi-final in 2022. His move to Selhurst Park was made permanent at the end of that season for a reported £9 million.
It’s been quite the FA Cup campaign for Mateta this season. The Frenchman was on the receiving end of that horror tackle by Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, which left him hospitalised, before making his grand return against Fulham.
In other news, this is how much Crystal Palace tickets for the FA Cup semi-final are set to cost at Wembley Stadium.
