Brazilian researchers contribute to advancing cancer treatment at Yale Cancer Center

Yale has long been a center for cancer research and innovation, dating back to its 1942 discovery of chemotherapy. Today, as one of the 57 designated comprehensive cancer centers in the U.S., Yale Cancer Center continues to be a hub for advancing the understanding and treatment of cancer.

For medical professionals from abroad, Yale offers a unique environment to contribute to cutting-edge research, access global resources, and collaborate on solutions for cancer care worldwide. Two Brazilian oncologists, Dr. Adriana Kahn and Dr. Philippos Apolinario Costa, are among the researchers at Yale working to expand knowledge and improve treatments for patients with cancer.

* Dr. Adriana Kahn, an Assistant Professor of Medicine in Medical Oncology, trained at the Universidade Federal da Bahia before pursuing further studies in France, Canada, and the U.S. before joining Yale. Her research focuses on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a particularly aggressive form of the disease that affects Black and Hispanic populations at higher rates. At Yale, she leads clinical trials aimed at advancing treatments for TNBC, an opportunity made possible by the university’s robust infrastructure for early-phase drug development and translational research.

* Dr. Philippos Apolinario Costa trained at the Universidade Federal do Vale do São Francisco and completed his residency in Uberlândia, Brazil, before moving to Yale for advanced research. His work focuses on sarcomas, particularly efforts to develop vaccines for Kaposi sarcoma. At Yale, Dr. Costa benefits from access to top-tier research facilities, clinical trial networks, and a collaborative research environment that enables breakthroughs in oncology. He is also involved in efforts to expand clinical trial access in Latin America, where historically fewer than 5% of trials have been conducted.

For these researchers from Brazil — as well as other medical professionals from across the globe — Yale provides the resources, mentorship, and global networks necessary to make significant contributions to cancer research. With its strong commitment to international collaboration, Yale continues to attract leading scientists worldwide, offering them the platform to develop new treatments, expand clinical trials, and bring innovations back to their home country.
